The local dealer is getting a 4450 with cab and 4wd that has 2300 hours on it. He is asking $40K. The hours seem super low for a 20 yo tractor.

Comments on the 4450 and price are welcome.

I f the hours are legitimate that is a pretty good deal. See lots of them around with several thousand hours or more and fresh paint and the asking price is usually mid to high 30's. 4450's for under 30,000 that are PS with MFWD usually are considered suspect as to condition and hours. There are low houred tractors of that vintage around but not many. One way to find is talk to the last owner and maybe those in that guy's community to verify it.

Sounds like a reasonable price if its a quad range. I think the 50 series still had the 8 speed powershift, so if it has that its less desirable. As to the tractor itself I think you'll be happy with it. The 40 and 50 series are generally considered the best they ever made.

Purchase a couple of oil analysis kits and an antifreeze corrosion inhibitor test strip. Sample the engine and trans oils and wait for the lab results.
Purchase if lab says ok.

Every 9,999hr's they get new again.....I would look the old owners up before I got excited....

The quad range transmission is a transmission with 16 forward gears, & 2 shifting levers. One lever puts it in A, B, C, or D range. the second is labeled 1, 2, 3, & 4. in a Z shaped pattern. #1, & 2 are on top of the Z. 3, & 4 at the bottom. The lever lets You shift between only 1, & 2, or between 3, & 4 without cluthing. Your limited to those 2 shifting patterns; unless you clutch! I hope this isnt too confusing.

The 15 speed powershift lets You go from a full stop to full speed without ever touching the clutch. Both are extremely durable, & proven tranmssions. The 8 speed powershift which started with the 20 series, continued to the 40 series is good; BUT... There is too much gap between transmission gear speeds, & they really jerk hard when changing gears. You have to think of the damage to drawn implements when constatly changing gears. You keep jerking a 6, or 8 ton wagon gear thats loaded for many years, & welds may brake, or the wagon hitch might buckle when shifting down as well!

The hours are fairly easy to tell.Paint and elbow grease can make them look like new but there is no way to get rid of the certain wear on parts. They are a little like people plastic surgery can help but there is no substitute for the youth or tightness you can feel in a low houred one.

Our 4430 and 4440s
(we had two) and our 4640 all had gears on the z pattern as follows:
Top of the "Z" on left was 4th gear,
top gear on right was 3rd,
next down was 2nd on left and 1st on right.
The z had an extra leg that came straight down from 1st gear to 1st reverse with 2nd reverse on the left.
Neutral was between 4-3 and 1-2 gears.

How's that for art? I'm not an expert. But it should give you an idea of the pattern.
16 speeds forward and 8 speeds reverse.

It looked better before I hit send I promise. I had the pattern right but for some reason when it went to the forum it changed. Oh well, I'll stick to being a mechanic instead of becoming a famous artist :-)

4 years ago, the farmer that we rented from had 4450 with 1800 hours sitting in his shed. Had the new cab smell yet. He polished it every use, it was an immaculate tractor. The guy retired 8 years earlier so it never was used much. He sold it outright for 35,000. In central WI, that was considered fair for both parties involved. Had the PS and MFWD. Sounds like a fair deal if everything checks out.

Go back a few years ago and that would have been top money for a 4450 w/ PS and MFWD. Everything has jumped tremendously in the last couple of years.
I dream of finding a 4450 like you described when I am financially ready. Now I am going to have a hard time sleeping tonight knowing that tractor won't be around to buy. LOL.
Like I said before the 40K is just about right and maybe even favoring the buyer a little in today's market.
