4490 clutch ...next step??

Removed Modulator assembly. The small weak spring, and the larger stiffer spring both appeared fine, not broke. Is it possible the have gotten week? I personally doubt it. What would be my next step with the abrupt clutch engagement? Is there a pressure check I need to do that could eliminate or substantiate a certain issue? If so, what type of gauges to I need, where do I test, and how do I test it? I am gonna search ebay for a service manual, but I'd like to keep troubleshooting it asap if I can. Anyone know if there is an old Case tractor expert in central MN? Thank You

Your best to find a good case service manual first. Usually there?s a trouble shooting guide in there. The last one I did there was a page for checking all the pressures on the transmission. I think it takes 6 different gauges hooked up at once to see what all is going on. Once the gauges are hooked up it?s very simple to watch all the pressures and follow the procedure. If one or more are not correct it?ll lead you to your problem. As 1370rod stated earlier you might have an internal leak that is causing your problem.

OK, Maybe I can find some one with a gauge manifold, and that's done it before. Are these types inside pretty disasterous, or can they be some thing fairly easy to fix once determined. Everything else seemed to always work good, shifts fine. Found one Service manual online for $200. Engine has 1200 hours on complete overhaul, Hydraulics have all been rebuilt, R134 AC update, newer tires, transmission was rebuilt also 700 hours before I acquired it, but the tractor was used very little overe the 8 years from then till I got it due to old farmer having bad knees and hips and hated climbing into it. He spent some big $ on it, would hate to think it could become a money pit powershift issue. Had worked flwless for me for the last 6 years

What kind of oil is in it? All the case powershifts I have worked on hate all other oils other then true IH hytran. Cenex trans/Hyd oil is the worst to run in it. Did an 870 once that they thought the trans was out. Drained out cenex oil, flushed with new hytran, new filters, drove around for couple hours, drained and repeat. Transmission straightened out and still going. Not saying it?s your problem but maybe service the transmission if it hasn?t been done lately. Arnold?s in st Martin mn has a gauge cluster there but you won?t be able to use it unless you have a tech come out and diagnose it. Might be the way to go.

I would have to disagree on the Cenex hydraulic oil. Bought my 2470 in 91 and changed transmission oil and replaced filters and put Cenex HTB in it. Have changed a changed a couple times since...always HTB. Never had a problem with the tractor. Older 70 and 30 series tractors all get Cenex HTB also. Have a 4690 and 1640 C-IH combine and they get Hy-tran as that is what was in them on purchase.

Dave find a 0-300 psi oil gauge that has 1/8 in pipe male thread on the hose. You can install that into the C-2 port marked on the control valve cover. With engine running at around 1000 rpm that gauge should read 180-210. Depress clutch all the way and it should drop to 0. Then by leaving pedal up slowly the press should rise slowly also until pedal is nearly up all the way then it should jump to the full pressure. If the gauge shows nearly nothing until the pedal is about 3/4 of the way up and then suddenly jumps to full pressure would be a indicator there is a leak and further testing would need to be done to pin point the location. It sounds like this is what could be occurring for you. Rod.
