4490 questions

Hello,
I am looking at a 4490 that a neighbor ownes. I don't really know much about them, and was wondering what I should look for. It has about 6,000 hours, 3point, pto. The engine was overhauled recently; I think he said he burnt a piston. Is the motor a weak spot for these? Or the transmission, or axles? I think he took pretty good care of it otherwise, but the cab interior is ruff. Thank you in advance.

I like mine, if you work them HARD they tend to heat up over several hours but they can pull ALOT. Steering and powershift are the only other issues. Steering has an electronic computer but if the rear wheels steer as they should don't worry about it. But if they shake as you turn there could be a bad wheel sensor. Powershift is like any other Case 90 series. I would run through all the shifts and REVERSE. If reverse is jumpy be careful, as powershift work is not far off.
my opinion is a great overall tractor.

I agree w/ Nedd. Great tractor. The motor is NOT a weak point. Excellent motor. My experience is that they run normal temp. if the radiator fins are occassionaly blown out, as with any tractor. Done once in the Spring, should be good for the year.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like I need to check out the transmission first off then. I have been looking up some information on these tractors. Both the 4490 and 4690 had the 504 engine in them. What other differences is there between them. What did they do on the 4690 to get more hp out of it? Can the 4490 be turned up safely?
Thanks again,

Martin

The 4690 has a intercooler around the intake manifold, injector pump turned up and I think larger wrist pins on the pistons. I plan on putting my old 4690 intake on my 4490 and turning it up. I know many have done it with very little trouble. I am hoping the other intake will also help lower my exhaust temps on my 4490.

my 4490 had spun a rod bearing i think it was shortly after it was rebuilt and i bought it and dint put very many hrs on it before it spun. sat for about 5yrs and and had it fixed cost about 5g and they had to ship the carilinas to be fixed.

I have a 4490 and it is a real fine tractor. Make sure you grease and check u joints. , pull the floor pan and lub the shift point. My 4490 sat for a year and it fired now, great tractor.

the 44 and 46s are about the same tractor both have 504s ,the 46s have inner coolers on them .the 2670s and 4690 where pretty much turned up for all they were worth in my opinion . the 4490 have the same mill in them as the 2590s . i grew up around 1070 1370s 2670s .today i farm with 2 2590s a 4490 and a 1370 great tractors dont abuse them or be stupid with them and they will run a long time the 504s are notorious for sleeves leaking around them leaking water in oil and compression into the water pto is a great option today wish i could run my auger cart with mine good luck
