45 Combine

Hi Guys,

I just purchased a John Deere 45 combine serial number 5492. I was wondering where I could find the break down of serial numbers telling which year it was built. I have been following the forum for awhile now because I was interested in getting an old combine and I know someone has mentioned where to get belts before but I couldn't remeber where. (flat, v belts and hexagon shaped)

Square back or roundback.Your JD dea;ler can probally help on sn.JD still carrys most belts(I have never found a belt thay couldnt get)JayDee Enterprises can alspo supply belts,but you have to give them a John Deere #.

If I remember correctly the first SN break was at 9001 so thats gonna be a very early one. Mid to late 50's. I second the belts from JayDee.

It is a roundback, tall grain tank, no cab. It also has the Hercules JX4C3 flat head engine in it. They started putting an overhead valve engine in the later 45s didn't they?

That makes yours a early 50smachine.my late (1965)squareback has aJohn Deere 165ci. engine.I dont know when they started using that engine .

I just looked up your serial number. It's a 1956.

They started putting JD engines in the 45's, as well as the 55, for the 1958 model year.

Would like to see a picture of your 45, there are not many of the 45's with the Hercules left. Would be neat to get a #10 corn head on it. The first combine available with a factory corn attachment.

Here are a couple photos from when I went and picked it up last week. The combine only came with the ten foot platform. I would really like to find a No. 10 corn attatchment to put on it. If anyone ones where there might be a decent one for sale I would be interested. I'm sure I will have some more questions for you guys later on, but thanks for all of the help so far.

That was a NICE find. Mine is a 1958, first year of the Deere engine. Its got a 145.

There is a nice looking #10 corn head on ebay right now the item # is 110633343116 or look under john deere combine on ebay,it is in Wheeler IL,has 3 days left on it

I know where there WAS one of these roundback 45's with the herc flathead sitting..

Haven't been by the place lately, but I'd bet it's still sitting there..

From what I can recall, it was complete, but if someone bought it, they weren't getting much.. the engine was set up, and I dare to bet the separator would have been too.

I always thought it would have been neat to buy and restore, but in the shape, I don't know there'd be a lot to restore.

Neighbor had a 1954 JD55 with a flathead hec. in it. As a kid I just loved the sound of it with a straight pipe on it cutting wheat. On a still day could hear that thing over a mile away.
