450 Again.......

Opened up the distributor, changed and set the points, and changed the condenser. Put the distributor back together, then hooked up a new 12 volt coil with resistor. The problem continues to persist. At this point, I think the problem is with the fuel system. When it began to chug, I shut off the gas, but experienced no difference, it just ran out and shut off. Upon start up, there is a large plume of black smoke. Do I just need to go thru the carb? Again, thanks....

Float issue. The little tab that pushes up on the needle could be worn in a tiny spot that causes the needle to tilt in the seat and leak. Also check the float for gasoline inside it. Jim

I'm confused. You said it that it starts smoking and chugging. Usually, if its rolling black smoke, its overfueling. Turning off the fuel should have cleared it up even for just a moment, and it should run OK for that moment. Now, you say it just shut down, no smoke? just chugging? Regardless, it still sounds like a carb problem to me. I would expect smoke at start up if you overchoked it, or theres a problem with the valve guides.

it definitely sounds like a carb issue . choke is not stuck closed is it . have you taken the air filter out of the equation ?

I had a similar problem when the choke plate came loose of its screws and began floating around in the carb. It could also be an air system problem.

I'd disconnect the tube from the air filter to the carb and see if that helps or not. You'd also be able to see if the choke plate is still attached and working as it should be.

try this... turn the needle in till it bottoms and count the turns (the one on the front lower half of carb) Was it more than 5 turns? If so turn it in till 5 and start it up see what she does and adjust in or out from there
