450B Questions

A few questions as I try to put my recently-acquired '73 450B (S/N 160509T) back into service:

1. My transmission temperature gauge doesn't register. I tested the gauge and it seems OK. My next task is to check that it's connected to the sender and/or that the sender is working, however I can't seem to find it. I've looked in the Service Manual and the online parts catalogue and there doesn't seem to be any information about the sender other than a reference in the webpage for the hour meter wiring harness. There is what appears to be a sender in the housing for the H-L-R input shaft but that unit seems to be too high to be immersed in the transmission oil so I suspect that it's the start safety switch. In any event, this unit seems set up for 2 terminals instead of 1 and has had the wires removed (another reason that I suspect that this is the start safety switch!) so I can't tell what it is. Where is the sender for the transmission temperature gauge?

2. There is a switch (again, unwired) on the loader bucket control valve. Is this for the 'return to dig' function? My unit has the Drott 4-in-1 bucket and I understand that 'return..' wasn't available with this. Could a previous owner have a replaced the valve where all that was available at the time was the valve for the 'return to dig' option?

3. As mentioned above, my unit has the Drott bucket. The number 57180 shows on the number plate. I can't tell if this is the model number or the S/N as the plate is too beat up to tell. I also can't read the other number. There appears to be a choice of 1 1/8 yard and 1 1/4 yard buckets available. How do I tell which bucket my unit has?

1. I believe you will find the transmissions sending unit down on the right side near the transmission suction screen.

2. It could be for the return to dig function. I think it might be a solenoid, not a switch. The solenoid could have been on the valve OEM, but missing other components needed the make the system function.

3. Measure and calculate the size.
