450B Transmission Temperature

Well, I managed to locate the trans. temp. sender (it's located on the plate that covers the screen on the RH side of the trans., if anyone's interested) and connected it to the gauge. Either the gauge is faulty or the sender is. Can anyone suggest how I test either of these units? Failing that, can anyone tell me what the temperature range should be and/or what the temperature of the top of the trans. should be (so that I can monitor it with a laser thermometer)?

Technical manual Section 40, group 20 has gauge and sender info.

Quick check on the gauge is to unhook the sender wire. with the switch on to power the gauge use a jumper wire to ground the sender terminal of the gauge. It should sweep full scale to hot.

The manual gives you a resistance value for the sender at a given temperature. you would need to remove the sender suspend it in a pan of water with a known thermometer and check the ohm resistance at the specified temperature.

The sender is monitoring oil temperature; the metal case may be cooler than the oil until after extended run time. Just something to remember.

When and if you determine your components to be good, My 450E which is essentially the same transmission, runs with the needle roughly middle way of the gauge, which is in the green nearly centered. My gauge has no numbers just green and red.
