Is there anyway to tell externally if an engine is a 451 or a 504??? I am looking at an ex puller that was built by a case dealership, but the current owner doesn't know if it is a 451 or 504.. Thanks

The 70-90 series engines all had the pump on the left side of the engine so it would have been impossible to tell by that. The 451 as used in the 1030 did indeed have the pump on the right side of the engine but was an indirect injection engine. the 1070 used a 451 direct injection design engine, pump on left. There should be a number cast into the block just ahead of the starter and the last number is stamped into a pad at the last number position. I believe the number for a 504 is a 5 stamping. Maybe someone else can help with more info, in general the higher hp 504s had oil coolers and some had twin oil filters. There should be a engine sn & model plate just below the deck at the rear of the engine above the starter. HTH. mEl
