46 B won't start

New 6 volt battery, new "0" guage battery cable, 2 new plugs [3116], new plug wires, new dist. wire cranks fine but backfires through exhaust with black smoke. Will not start. When putting new plug wires on I noticed left cyl. plug wire was on bottom dist. hole not top one as per owners manual. New one is on top now. Whats next ? THANKS

Start by checking the timing. you want the LH (#1, Flywheel side) to be the top wire on the distributor.

Changing the wire to the top hole in the cap without removing the mag and resetting it will result in being 180 degrees out of time and backfire while cranking. Put the wires back as they were and see if it will start and not backfire.

If it has a Mag and its 180 out of time she may pop n bang and/or backfire. If its a direct drive mag like a Wico C or X and thats the case, a simple top n bottom plug wire swap will make her run HOWEVER if its a reduction gear drive mag Like a Wico AP a wire swap will NOT make them run correct, the mag itself need to be retimed NOT 180 out.

The Left flywheel side fires first on its TDC then 180 later the right fires on its TDC.

switch them back for starters, the mag is in backward but it works fine like that with wires backward. then inspect cap, & check float level.
