460 charging update

i have found the wiring diagram for my 460, so I'm gonna rewire the tractor.

some of the old wires are in bad shape,, some not connected, some not even there I think..

the system is not charging; I took the pos cable off the bat post and it started to die.

gonna replace with new 12ga wire making a new wiring harness. the harness that is on there now is still the original; cloth insulation. 57 years old, I think Mable got the good from her original wiring. I'm a 61 model and Mable is a 62 model. oh the 60's were trying times.

if new wires don't solve the problem the next step is to upgrade to a gm 10si alternator.

Thanks for the update, sounds like a plan, faulty/resistive (or even missing!) wire or connections or poor grounds can cause all sorts of charging or ignition problems, so rewiring is in order.

Once all done and after insuring BOTH the Generator and Voltage Regulator are well grounded and polarizing, if she still fails to charge my Charging Troubleshooting Procedure linked below can help find the problem. The VR by pass test can determine if non/ charging is a Generator or a Voltage Regulator problem. I don't recommend removing battery cables as a means of testing.

Good luck and best wishes, keep us posted.

PS the decision to upgrade to an Alternator (and the proper wiring subject to chosen alternator) is yours alone, there are advantages as well as disadvantages, just MAKE SURE you match the ground as most alternators require NEGATIVE ground....

Bass, you say you are going to replace the wiring with 12 ga. which in general is fine. However, you mention the
possibility of going to an alternator in the future. I would suggest that in your harness from the voltage regulator
to the generator that you run a 10 ga wire. I believe that it should go to the Arm. or Bat. terminal on the
generator. In fact I think you will find that the original wire is heavier than a 12 ga. This way if you swap to an
alternator you will already have a wire in the harness that will handle the higher amp charge output.

And I was going to add I am a ?62 model, but my M is a ?48 model. So when it gives me problems I just blame its old and Cantankerous personality. Wish we could edit post here.
