need help guys. has anyone else run into this. re ringed my stock std 460 gas 221cid piston with aftermarket a and I rings, now tractor will not run worth a crap. talked to tech support at a and I and with out giving me a real answer they just say their rings are different and wont work with oe pistons. does this sound right. so now a need to buy there complete kit or find oe rings which is hard. has anyone else here just re ringed there oe pistons and if so what brand of rings did u use.. any help is greatly appreciated

Define not running worth crap. Lots of possibilities. Valve clearance, timing, point gap, carb adjustment, getting enough fuel,Valves seating correctly, ring gap staggered all possible issues to not running right even plugs and gap.

How did the rings fit compared to the ring grooves? Ring end gap? Sure you have the pushrods in place and adjusted correctly?

i cant even figure out what your talking about. yes there is diff. types of rings. but you have to do your homework . make sure you have the rings for the pistons. correct width and bore size. check the ring end gap. .004 for each inch of bore. install them correctly.hone cyl's also. stay away from crome rings. if the rings are correct for that piston it has to make compression to run. your valve lash adjustment may be the culprit. you need a feel for a feeler guage.if that is not set correctly the engine will run like crap. have you checked the compression??? that is the most important step... and everyone pretty well skips that. we have no idea if this is your first engine overhaul or your 40th. and just presume a lot of stuff also.

first thing check compression,if it is low air charge cyl. find out where it leaks, 2nd if you have chrome liners you cant use chrome rings they'll never seat , can only have chrome on 1 side ( piston or liner) if you find the ring aren't correct for them pistons im sure the right ones are made , hastings will make them for you if they dont have them is stock but usually have them on shelf . personally suppliers like A&I , tisco & so on are the last place i like to buy parts from because of the changes they made to the parts & quality is a big issue too . a good place to get engine parts is agkits.com also , i have bought several engine kits there price & quality is great, they also have good tech support to get proper parts.
