Could someone please tell me on a Farmall 460 tractor what position is the handle in to engage the pto, forward or rearward.when it is all the way forward there is not much room for your right leg. thank you. On my tractor the shaft seems to be turning no matter what position it is in.

When engaged, the pto lever should be in the rear position. When disengaged, the lever has a forward locked position.

I'll add that you should be able to feel a tight spot in the middle when it snaps on and off. The later pto with the big plug on the top allows for adjusting the clutch without disassembly.

If it turns when locked forward, it needs to be repaired. It has an internal brake mechanism to slow and stop equipment. If it turns equipment no matter what position the lever is in it is unusable. Jim

I have a couple of 460's and have the same issue with a "drag" on the PTO. It turns all the time so I have to turn the tractor off to hook any thing up. However when anything is hooked to it the equipment does not run and you can engage of disengage the PTO to stop the equipment. Probably not the safest thing and should be taken apart and repaired but it does work.

In this case adjusting the clutch/brake would probably solve the problem. One of my 560s did that years ago. The IT book tells how to adjust and it is pretty easy or was on mine. I have two 460s right now and they both work as supposed to, so have not had to do them. But i would make them behave as designed. Shutting the tractor off everytime you hook up or take PTO off is a pain when it only takes a few minutes to figure out how to adjust them. If it needs repair then that is the answer. Not worth tempting Mr Murphy when it comes to the possible risk. I want to die with all my appendages intact. Regards, John.

PS on these older tractors like 460/560s I make sure the operating handle is truly secured before I put my fingers down there. I had a tractor that would shut off the PTO but not be locked in place. You would think it was but Mr Murphy at any time could of let it get back to winding round and round. Just a habit I got into. Like chocking wheels when your jacking a vehicle or what ever, Firm believer on these to double checking the "out of battery" function.
