4600 clutch issue

My tractor has a issue. The clutch doesn't seem to release properly. When you press the clutch it doesn't always release until you step on the brakes. Do that and it works fine. May release right away for a couple of times and then it hangs up again. New clutch time?

Have you checked the drain hold in the bottom of the clutch housing, the one on my 4500 got plugged allowing the clutch housing to fill with water and oil causing the clutch to stick
Once the clutch is saturated and becomes sticky it’ll need to be replaced

Thanks. I was pretty much expecting this. I don't know about anyone else but with me things seem to occur in multiples of 2. Did a clutch change in the Farmall I had, 1650 Oliver I still have, and our Ford Ranger. So the 4600 will make the fourth.

I'm more inclined to suspect that the interface between the flywheel and the pads is rusted together, causing the two to stay engaged when the pedal is depressed. I have an oriental built tractor that has a lever that locks the clutch pedal in the "release" position when the tractor isn't going to be used for awhile so that this condition won't occur....especially helpful for rice farmers in the orient.

Cure for that would be to slip the clutch till it quits sticking....kind of like "riding the clutch pedal" in cars and trucks back before auto trannys became popular. Shouldn't take but a few minutes to get the interface surfaces slicked up.

If it was oil, it would be slick and easily released to the point that it might "slip"....not carry the full engine torque to the tranny input shaft to some degree.

That’s about how it went for me
One of the pressure plate release lever adjustment bolts feel out on my 555 Farmtrac that has the 3930 engine swap
Release bearing locked up on my 6610
Stripped the splines out of the pto input shaft and pressure plate on my 4000
All within a 6 month period

During this last cold and snow snap the starter went old on the 6610, alternator quit charging on the 4000 and power steering line blew on my F-450

Look at the bright side.....if the "law of averages" works for you, you should be trouble free for a couple of years or so.

I still haven’t fixed the 6600 from when I hit a sink hole bending the steering and busting the radiator, also need to replace the rings in the 4000SU and relace all the belts on the round baler before hay season gets here

Well good luck. Hope you (physically) didn't get banged up when you hit it. We have cracks here in the summer. Some I have checked at 10" wide and at least 8' deep......but when the rains come, if for a reasonable period, the cracks will close back up leaving a slight dip......capturing all that water to feed the summer crops. That's why, back when cotton was in demand, this area of N. Tx. the cotton crop was referred to as the "King" as it made good use of that underground water....course Milo, Corn, and Sorghum Sudan made good use of it today...as I do for my summer Sudan crop.

Yepper, finally was able to quit feeding hay so into the shop we go. Split and found oil contamination. I have issues with the power steering leaking and now that it's split I was able to get at things easier. Noticed the steering column is a bit loose were it's bolted to the case, so I figure oil was seeping through. Don't see traces of oil behind the flywheel or back behind the throw out bearing.

While it’s split I’d replace the transmission input shaft seals, if the smaller seal starts leaking it’ll put oil right on the clutch disc
Removing the clutch cross shaft is the hardest part of that job

Thank you for your help. Just want to make sure I don't mess something up, see photo. All I need to do is unbolt the small plate and it will slide over input shaft, correct?

Yes just the small plate (nose cone), it’ll slide off the input shaft with the pto input in the tube then you can remove that pto input from the sleeve to access the big seal, small seal is inside the pto input
Mark the plate and housing so the plate is turned in the correct position when reinstalling
