4600 hydraulic fluid change

I changed the fluid on my 4600 and the person at the New Holland dealer said it took around 3 gallons for the transmission and 8.5 for the rear. I put around 3.5 gallon in the transmission to get it to the only line on the dip stick (see pic) I put 9 gallons in the rear and it never came out the plug where you check it. Does that one mark on the dip stick mean full? Also on the cap on the rear end it has a tube sticking up and it had a piece of black tape over it. What should be there? Thanks for the help

Yes, the mark on the dipstick means full. As for the rear axle, if you're looking through the correct hole (a 1/4'' pipe plug opening), keep pouring oil in it until it comes out. You're not far off. As for the pipe, someone else put that on for an oil return of some sort. Either remove the nipple and put a pipe plug in that hole or else remove the whole thing and get the correct cap and gasket for it.

I'm to familiar with the transmission dipstick on that model tractor, but it looks like the stick might have originally been longer, and that the current end is where it broke off, and that was where the minimum line was and the remaining line is the full line.

As for that fill plug on the rear axle, that tube/pipe was not stock. That plug was originally solid. Some folks added a diverter valve in place of the blocking plate to power an external control valve and they would drill a hole in the fill plug to attach the return line from the external control valve to.

My tranny dip sticks have only 1 line and when you drain and refill with the published quantity, the fluid comes up to that line.
