4610 alternator wiring

Looking at the back of the alternator, can anyone tell me what each of the wires are (position 3 has two wires) and where they terminate so I can trace them? I'm hoping one of these wires is either damaged or broken and it's causing or contributing to my voltage stabilization problem. Thanks.

It's a Motorola alternator.

#2 is the "FIELD" terminal that supplies power to the rotating field. Take the wire off and put battery voltage to the TERMINAL and the alternator should put out full charge.

#1 and #3 are "AUX"/Stator and GROUND.

IIRC, #1 will be insulated from the case and be the AUX terminal and #3 will NOT be insulated from the case and be the GROUND terminal. Verify which of those two are grounded and which is insulated.

No. This alternator uses an external regulator, hence the external field wire. The regulator should be mounted in front of the fuel tank, and have 4 wires going to it.

and if you have a problem with the alt the cheapest way out is most likely a Delco conversion. It's quite simple to do...

Ok, thanks. I'm hoping there's a break in the wiring between the alt and the regulator. If the alt is the problem, I'll be back on here asking how to convert it to a Delco. Thanks again.
