4610 Ford engine

Last week I posted a message about the engine in my 4610. The piston came apart and busted the block.

After looking a long blocks knowing I don't have a core I called a guy who has a small parts place close by. I have bought a lot of new and rebuilt parts from him over the years and the are all still going. Every time his prices are a lot lower than anyone else.

He gave me a price on a complete rebuilt engine of $2250.00 That is bored, sleeved back to original size. This is a complete engine with a new injector pump, rebuilt injectors, water pump etc. Not just a rebuilt long block.

He wanted my old engine so he can put the correct intake and exhaust manifolds on it. Make sure it has the right water pump, oil and water temp sending units and fuel filter set up so when I pick it up all I have to do is bolt the flywheel and clutch on it and start putting the tractor back together.

He also wants to do this so he can test run the engine before he will give a 90 day warranty on it.

I should be picking up the new engine tomorrow along with a clutch disk, pressure plate and a new radiator tomorrow.

This is about $300.00 more than I can buy a block, have all the machine work done and buy the parts to built a engine. I have a new injector pump that I would use so this is one thing that is already pulled out of my price. I gave him the pump to use and he said he would cut $400.00 of the price of the engine.

So I have 90 days from tomorrow to make sure the engine is as good as he says it will be.

I guess my question is are there many other people out there that build tractor engines and sell them at this price? At least 3 cylinder Ford engines.

He knows me well enough he offered to let me pay for the engine when I can. I will pay for it when I pick it up but he sold me on the engine when he made the offer to pay when I could.

sounds good.. but still bites.

too bad you couldn't have fouind a 4000 with a blown sos and bought cheap for just the engine.. then parted the rest.

That price is almost too good to be true. For that kind of money it doesn't make sense to look at used takeouts of any type or style. Good luck with it.

You're being diplomatic today...
Any time I've priced parts out for them with that amount of work I don't think I could cover costs for that figure never mind allow something for labor.

I am approaching this one with caution. I have thought it to good to be true from the beginning.

Since I have been buying parts from this guy for the past 10 years, have his cell phone number in my pocket and know where he lives I am willing to take a chance.

My tractor has mechanical oil and temperature gauges on it. I also spent the money for a good new muffler. If the oil pressure is not right and the engine does not sound right I will take it back to him.

when I did my 201, I could have got about the same deal from a local shop, a (long block). It had all the plugs in the ports, nice yellow paint, etc. Didn't have the Inj. pump or injectors.

My original block was good, had spun a bearing. I, and another rebuilt it for $1600, (parts and 400 for his labor). If I remember, lots of parts are from other 3rd world countries too.

still going...sl
