4620 steering valve leak

4620 sprung a hyd oil leak when I started it today, I may have
had the engine revs too high when backing off the manual de
stroke screw on pump!?

It's leaking near the hand throttle between the steering wheel
& the valve itself .. Any ideas? It's a reman valve sourced in
USA about three years ago & this is first trouble

hoping Tim S or TX Jim might have an idea on this? It could be an O-ring or worse, cracked housing... didnt even look under dash cowl yet but removed steering wheel and hand throttle assembly and oil pouring out the top with the engine running? If I need to ship the valve to you Tim then I'm willing to do that.

What you did had nothing to do with steering leak.
Upper seal beneath steering wheel has nothing to do
with leak. Oring and backup for piston shaft is your
leak. You will need complete seal kit installed.

Yes seals can be replaced without a test bench as many have been resealed without one. Only problem is correct operation & no leaks won't be established until after reinstalling valve on to tractor unlike on a test bench such as Tim s has.

O-ring & backup washer(parts key 18 & 19) is where the problem is. Adjusting valves requires a special plate & a dial indicator. I'm not sure if one can reseal without disturbing valve settings.

thanks Jim, I had a look while ago (valve is still on tractor) and removed steering sheel & found parts key no.9 is pinched.. is it wishful thinking to just try replacing
this and see if it stops the leak?

It's most likely that O-ring #19 is worn and allowing oil to go up the shaft and over powering seal #9

you are spot on Tim & thanks to the other posters too. I had a valve seal kit here and replaced the seals (parts key no.9 X 2) at the top of the shaft and it has stopped the oil but I didn't let the engine run for long as I could see the seals were starting to come under pressure & would blow eventually.

Tim - do you have an email address I could contact you on?

just wanted to update you guys, think I am sorted, this is due to the help you provided and especially Tim S who was never too busy to take calls or respond to emails and man does he know his stuff with these steering valves! reckon 18/19 in Jims diagram is what caused the problem originally, but I still had a slight leak after replacing those.. the fix to that is below (copy of email to Tim)

I spent time this morning on the top part seals and I held the shaft up as high as it would go while fitting the seals and then put the snap ring on and it all seemed secure.. last time I did it, the shaft was a couple of inches down and it moved up when the tractor started and may have upset the seals? anyways - it ran for 20 minutes without any leaks.. not sure if I am out of the woods yet but hopefully!
