4630 startup question

This 4630 starts like its loaded up on fuel and belches black smoke then once it comes to an idle it runs perfect. What is going on in the pump to cause this sort of start up. The 4960 starts normally. Is the pump held in full fuel while cranking, could the aneroid valve be causing this?
thanks for any help understanding this one.

The aneroid is supposed to reduce fuel at startup and at little/ no boost conditions. I just backed of my aneroid on my 4630 and it actually helped starting even though it has a little more black smoke at startup.

if your 4630 is like mine, if the sun goes down behind a cloud on a 50 degree day, you better get your either can out...

here's a link to mine starting without either on a 50 degree day... before I adjusted the aneroid.

When starting pump goes to 21 MM full rack travel so retard notches cut on plungers set timing back from running timing, magnet holds to about 1500 RPM before governor can overcome magnet force. Most use TDC when setting timing, but actual timing can be 25 to 30 degrees running, depending on pump spec. Pump lift to port closure is set with dial indicator on cyl 1, then turned in direction of rotation and hub marks are set. Example, LPC plus 15 degrees equals 30 on running engine with rack at about 16MM or less. Over retard notch will cut back timing depending on how deep plunger is cut from top, may be 5 degrees pump for 10 on engine, or more. Next time you start it try this, as soon as engine reaches about 800-1000 RPM quickly pull stop and release, will get off of magnet sooner to cut down on smoke. Early 4430 and 4630 did not start as well as later models, even later 4430 and 4630 pumps had differrent plungers in pumps than early models had.

dieselfume
After watching your video I think you should change your handle from dieselfume to dieselSMOKE. I never seen a 30 series smoke that much on engine start up.

This is the first time I've heard mention of momentarily pulling stop cable after engine fires to get rack back away from magnet. I was aware of the magnet in the inj pump and it's function. I've always not really liked how my 4255 engine started up at the higher rpm's but it has lasted over 10,000 hrs.

Great reply"s, thanks for the info and the video. I don"t know if its a combination of low compression and or great batteries but she sure does turn over. We generally give her a little whiff and save on the starter a bit. I will try the shut off trick and post later. Thank you again

Your batteries and starter are certainly in top shape. Many older tractors only give you one chance.Older semis started just like that but ran fine after they warmed up some.Cummings motors could really smoke up a shop.

I called the original owner of the tractor last night, and asked him if he'd ever had any work done to it (in regards to my transmission problems in above thread) he mentioned that that tractor had always started that hard since new! I put on the gear reduction starter and that helped. anymore, I just give it a whiff of either, let it fire, give it another whiff if needed, then just let it warm up. we had a 4250 tractor that started really hard, but not quite this bad.

Well i tried the shut off cable idea today, its about 45 degrees out. Lets just say she did not like that at all. I have never heard it start that bad, It was stuck running on maybe two cylinders and would not fire any more. I gave it a whiff and she woke right up.I think if I would have left the shut off cable alone it would have started better. I think we will stick to the old method of starting. Thanks to all for helping me understand why they start this way.
