464 Motor Questions

Hello,

I have a few questions about the D179 in my 464 that I've had for several years. The short story is that it has a blown head gasket between number 1 and 2 cylinders. As long as I had to have the top of the motor off I figured I'd fix two other problems, namely it smokes like a chimney and after getting warmed up it looses oil pressure.
First question is what to do about the ring ridge at the top of the sleeve I can't manually push the piston out because the rings won't come past the ridge and am nervous about doing damage if I try to force the issue.
Second, is it worth it to hone the cylinders at all before reinstalling the pistons. I've received mixed recommendations on this and figured a few more opinions wouldn't hurt.
Third, beneath the rear most main bearing is a block of metal which the oil pan bolts into but which appears to be removable I haven't spent a lot of time looking at it but if someone knows the proper way to remove this in order to remove the main bearing it would be easier than me pounding on it and becoming frustrated.

If the ridge is that bad, it needs new sleeves.

I can't feel the ridge with my fingernail but neither can I push the piston out by hand. I think it might be more carbon build up than actual wear.

Hi, you said it smokes like a chimmeny, does it use any oil? Low oil pressure, is the crankcase oil diluted with Diesel fuel from a leaking lip seal on the injection pump drive shaft? How many hours on the engine?
Go to casein.com then parts, search by model and enter D-179 and that will give you the parts break down.
