I have a pto problem. Pto is stuck half engaged. It just grinds and pto lever wont move in or out. I have it torn down but pto shaft wont pull out the back so I can pull hdr pump. what would hold this in place other than bolts on rear bearing? Top of trans is off and side covers. It is free (turns by hand). Thanks.

PTO shaft MAY be twisted in the splined area that passes through the hydraulic pump.

"Fix" is to cut off the shaft with a Sawzall.

It may be seized or twisted in the couple at the other end...spray it with PB or Croil a few times, put the tractor in gear, get a pipe wrench on the shaft and woark it back and forth, see if that helps it free up. You do have all the bols out correct?
Had one that the splines got old on and it turned in the coupler..couldnt free it by what I mentioned above; I hooked a come along to the drawbar of a heavier tractor, used a long hardened bolt that fit through the rollpin hole on the shaft, make a U out of chain and hoook on the top and bottom of the shaft, use washers so the links stay in contact with the shaft, then tighten the come along so you have pressure, tap the shaft with a hammer inside the tranny housing, squirt it some more with the cutting oil, tap more, lil more pressure...keep at it it'll come out.

I agree with both answers to a point. Try to work it out but do not use too much pulling pressure.

I would not want to break a chunk off the alum. hydraulic pump houseing or tear up the internals.

At some point, just before doing damage, give up and cut it.
