47/8 A---Scrap or Hope?

Water is running (not dripping) out of a 1/16 in. (+/_) hole in the block about 3 in behind the left side cylinder petcock. Is there any hope short of a new block or do the scrappers get it?

If the tractor in my opinion is in good shape I would fix it. Were loosing John Deeres every day to scrapers. I know of a guy that said that he welded up alot of them. I know of a guy that threw away a styled D block because it was froze and busted. The other man said he should of welded it up. I dont know how bad yours is but I would try to get a good welding man that knows how to fix cast or find another used block. I would try to save the tractor if I could. Good luck.

Get the block welded, put it back together and enjoy it. I hate to see old tractors scrapped or parted. There are probably way more parts at the used parts places than will ever be used. Someday many of those parts will get scrapped form non use.

I need a little more guidance guys. When we wire brushed the hole it grew to about 3/4 in. How big is too big to weld? It is starting to look like this tractor lead a pretty tough life, gears broken off the brake pinon, a big chunk missing from the steering worm.

We've put a lot into this old tractor but are a very long ways from parts supplies. If this block can be welded we'll push on but a new block with shipping might put us over the edge.

Thanks again for your input.

Since cast iron requires that you use nickel rod the first thing you need to know is that welding with that is more like brazing than welding. As such, proper management of heat should allow that hole be be fixed.
