47 B shifter

My brother has a 1947 JD model B that has transmission problems. The transmission slips out of gear and sometimes the shifter will actually come right out in your hand. Any ideas on what this might be and is it an easy fix? Thanks in advance.

There is a snap ring on the shaft that kepps everything in place. I"m guessing this snap ring has slipped off or broken. The groove the snap ring sits in can get worn or rusted out. You can easily pull the cover and check this out. Look in the parts book.

the snap ring will only fix your shifter coming out. popping out of gear is caused by loose worn bearings in tranny, particularly the countershaft. dont be afraid they are adjustable to a point & only two shafts in the simple tranny.
