470 water pump ?

My 470 diesel sometimes sounds like a bearing is going bad at the front end of the engine. The noise goes away after a minute or so. I'm thinking its the bearings in the water pump, and I need to replace the water pump. I don't have much experience working on any tractor, so I'm wondering if my guess makes sense, or am I looking at the wrong thing. Also, assuming it is the water pump, is there anything I need to be watching for when i swap it out, or is it pretty straight foward? No overheating issues now, so if it is the water pump, hopefully I get it taken care of before its a bigger problem. Thanks for any advice.

Before you dig into it take the belts off and spin the fan by hand. Listen to see if there are dry bearings that squeak or rattle. Wiggle the fan to see if the water pump bearings are tight. Start the engine with the belts off and listen for your problem.

It could be the alternator or the PS pump is a bit low and whines before warming up.
Do some careful research as suggested, before replacing water pump.---------Loren

Thanks for the advice. The alternator is only about 2 years old, so that's why I was leaning towards the water pump. I follow all suggestions before going too far.
