I just finished installing custom power steering and a 6-12 volt conversion kit on my 48 ford 8n and I replaced the floor mounted push button strarter switch, and now it just grinds instead of going into gear. PLZ, PLZ, PLZ help.

Ordered it out of Tenn I think, (would have to ask my wife) and it's absolutely fantastic. 1 finger turning with a front bucket.
szI can supply the name and # of the gut that makes them. Not sure all what makes and models he makes them for except the ford 8n,9n, and I think the 4000, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to give him a call.

His name is Roland Jackson and His phone number is 620-357-6546. And plz let him know Steve Edson refered you. Don't think I'll get anything for it but sure want to let him know I've got his back for a fantastic product.

Put the tractor in 3rd gear. Press the clutch all the way in. Try to roll or push the tractor. If it doesn't roll, and the engine turns when it's pulled, the clutch plate is stuck to the pressure plate and flywheel.

Why would the plates be stuck together when it wasn't a month ago before i took it apart and put on power steering and a 6-12 conversion kit. The only thing I can think of, (AS I SAID BEFORE) is I replaced the push button starter switch
, which is located on the shifter plate. Which means I had to pull the shifter plate OFF.

Then don't run the test. Ignore my input. All I have to go with is your condition in the first post. I and others have to make some assumptions. Assumptions: You started the tractor engine and have it running. It is in neutral. You used the clutch and attempt to select a gear. The gears do not engage, and they just grind.

There is no way to roll or push the tractor where it sits, and the front bucket is up on blocks.
I have Not tried to much to put it in gear with the engine off. It doesn't really seam to want to go into gear. Like I said it's acting like the clutch isn't working at all.

And I am truly sorry for sounding stupid, But I am truly frustrated with this. I really think it has to do with replacing the starter button, but thats why I'm on here. YOU GUY'S KNOW WAY MORE THAN I Do about these tractors.

OK, Should I do what u said after I lower the bucket and then pull the tractor with my truck. And see what happens?

Hello FF1, welcome to YT! Not sure why you would have did this to do the work you described but did you have the tractor split and the clutch apart? If you did you cleaned it to well when you put it back together. Did you power wash the tractor before this work? Was it rainy or humid during the time it sat unused? All things that can contribute to the lined clutch plate having some iron oxide (rust) adhering it to the metal surfaces it mates against. Does your new starter button configuration allow you to crank the engine with the starter while it is also in gear? If so no need to manhandle your tractor to verify your problem. Unhook the coil wire, get on put it in 2nd gear hold the clutch down and hit the starter button. Be ready on the brakes if the machine is in tight quarters if the plate is stuck it will want to move. If it doesn’t try to move either you have another problem or your need to send me $50 for fixing your tractor. Doc, is used to Fords in stock form, the starter can’t engage on them while they are in gear. So that is why he directed you to do it differently.
Editing to add: I see you had a bit of trouble understanding how to post on this forum. Must have thought 4 times are a charm. This is the only foul up we are going to allow you to make here! :ROFLMAO:

It Will not allow it to start in gear. That being said I believe I got it working, will have to now adjust the clutch but I can get it in gear if the throttle isn't to high. A VERY BIG thx to everyone that has answerd me. I truly appreceiate it.

Can't start the tractor in gear with the clutch in. The starter button won't allow it. (Safety Feature). I didn't split the tractor, just replaced the starter button. (Could I have screwed something up when I replaced the button, since it's on the shifter plate and has to be removed to change button?)
