The lever was used to adjust working depth of cultivator shovels. there was one on each side where the lift pipe/strut attached to the axle. HM221 IIRC. Many hours on the cultivator, none on the M other than riding. We traded the M for the 350U I still have. The cultivators went on our 53 Super-h. Still in the family.
