I bought an A last fall and just brought it home last week. It runs good and has good power, no smoke, but when it idles it makes a sound like a chain driven unit would make. I have a 730D that I"ve had for 15yrs and I"m pretty familiar with it but this is my first time around an A. Is this normal? The fluids all seem to be up.

Have you checked the oil in the 1st reduction..??

Could it be the front fanshaft bearing needs greased..??

Where is the noise coming from..describe it more..

Is this in neutral and with or without the clutch engaged..??

Does it have Hydrolics..if so, is the fluid level ok there..?

That front fan-shaft bearing needing greased will sound like the noise is in the Governor..

Ron..

it does it with the clutch engaged or disengaged both, I greased everything I could find. I pulled cover off of the flywheel and it was tight and no oil leaking, I think I checked the the oil in first reduction, not sure if I was in right place . Ordered a manual but haven't got it yet. hydraulics are fine. Thanks

But, you need to better describe the "sounds" and where they are coming from...

The front fan-shaft bearing may have a pipe-plug in it (at the top, center)..
If it does, you should install a grease fitting to grease that bearing..
Some leave the grease fitting in, others remove it and put the pipe plug back in..

The hydraulics are low. It sounds like gears turning and not being lubed. Seems to be coming from somewhere by the flywheel.

If the noise is really from right behind the flywheel, the LH cam bearing could be going bad. This could cause the crank/cam/governor gears to not quite mesh as they have for the last 60 years and whine some.
