I bought a 49 chevy pick-up,someone has already changed the motor, trany, and rear,it has a 6 cylinder with the valve cover bolts around the outside of the cover,it also has vents in the front top of the cover. Can any one tell me the cubic in. and what year it is

james look at the side cover, where the lifters are, is it one piece or 2? and if one piece is it about 6 inches tall or about 10?, choises would be 250, 261 or 292 if its a chevy engine, there are some others if the engin is a gmc

It sounds like a 235 to me. They will bolt right in where the 216 was, and look nearly identical except for a shorter side cover, and the valve cover has screws around the outside, 4 if I remember correctly. It could also be a 261, which looks identical to a 235 except it has a water pump by-pass hose. Original blue paint would be 235, original green would be 261. 230 and 250 were red and had 2 side covers about 6 inches high, 292 had 2 side covers about 9 inches tall. Very unlikely to be a GMC, which were 228, 248, and 270. Very rare GMC would be a 302. Check out stovebolt.com website, or look up chevrolet casting numbers on Google for more.
