49 vac case tractor

got a need to know question , got a 49 vac that has been breaking dist gears , dropped the pan yesterday to clean out the broken gear and check for anything that maybe causeing this problem ,and refill with oil , what i did see in there was the oil pump gear , crank gear and the cam gear did'nt have much oil on them , all the mains and rod bearing were wet , this tractor has been setting 2 months waiting for me to get to working on it , thought i would put the dist back in and start it up and see if they get wet from the crank throw splash , am i headed in the right direction , or is it the oil pump that lubes these gears , thanks in advance

had a 530 do that after I rebuilt the dist with new bushing, when I did it it had a slight tight spot when turning, fired it up ran lees than two minutes then took out the dist gear as well as cam gear,( it had broke a cap on me before) then I realized the dist shaft was bent replaced cam and dist runs perfect now,, tractor had 5500 hrs so I did a complete overhaul at the time had all original brgs still inplace even the original clutch all stamped 1969 sorry for the ramble some times my fingers won't quit cnt

thanks for the reply case nutty , i got a good cam i havent put in it yet and a diff dist , but wanted to start it and see if them front gears are getting oil alright , need to find this out befor i go in the engine again , mite need to replace the gears also , was wonder how these front gears get there oil from , crank throws , or oil pump

The front cam bearing is pressure lubricated by the oil pump. The gear train is lubicated by the front cam bearing run off. If the gear train is not lubed the oil hole in the gear may not be lined up with the oil hole in the cam or obstructed. Go to the link below and read the cam pages. The rest of the cam assembly including the center & rear bearings, lobes, lifters, distributor drive & driven gears are lubicated down through the pushrod holes from the top deck run off.

I would pull the valve cover, run the engine, and make sure you are getting sufficient oil up
to the rocker arms and run off down the pushrod holes.

guess they could of dryed down some in 2 months , they wernt completly dry , i found that there was a good 1/16th in. of free play , 1/8 total on the hear for the oil pump , book says there's 2 shims in the oil pump mount that can be removed to take the free play out , anybody ever had to remove shims

(thanks joe for the link to both the lube and the tear down section , it cleared up alot of unknowns for me on my case , looks like i got some clogged oil holes up front , this tractor was right full of , [ i think years of non detergent oil ] , when i changed out the oil filter the return hole was plugged , i poked at it with a peace of wire and it finally got unclogged and drainned , when i did the first oil change i put some sea foam in and it took alot of crud out of the engine , i put new oil in and ran it tell it broke the dist gear , drainned it the other day and the oil was clean , and the inside of the block looked brand new , did have good lube in the upper head , looks like the problem is the lube hole that oils the gears maybe plugged , hope i'm on the right track , thanks againreply to post at 21:53:34 07/22/12)
