I am looking at buying a john deere 4960 it has 10000 hours and the motor has low compression. How much would it usually cost for a shop.to rebuild a motor in these?

It depends on what is found once inside the engine. Piston liners corroded? Head should be planed and injectors serviced. Will the crankshaft need to be turned? On the low end if it is sent to a shop 5,000-7,000 dollars for a minor overhaul. Major overhaul 12,000 plus dollars.

Maybe your area is different, around here it would be 20,000 for an engine overhaul. If block is cavitated, block would need machining and inserts where the liners sit, this alone is close to 5,000. If they just throw some liners in it and look the other way, maybe 12,000.

Just an IH guy throwing mud but isn't 10K hours a little low for a 4960 to be needing
a rebuild ? Was always told that if put on a dyno it was difficult to find one "only" putting
out rated HP. My $.02,YMMV,

Over the years I have seen JD 6 cylinders at 10k hours in nice shape.
Check for blowby in the valve cover vent pipe...discharges under the tractor.....If you have a lot of flow you are getting a lot of compression seeping out around worn rings...if little to none rings are in good shape.
A little blue exhaust pipe smoke on startup isn't that big of a deal if it dissipates in a few minutes. May be some white smoke too but that's just engine start condensation and burns off in a couple of minutes...a normal occurrence.
Fast response on engine start after turning the key to Start and readily accepts rapid throttle advancement.
No mechanical clanking.....valve lifters are solid and you may hear some ticking sounds on startup but should disappear after engine warms up.....not a problem to readjust valve gaps if ticking pursues.

I had several over the years. My first was an LP 4020 and I got an education with that THING but I just had to have a JD and that one became available. I did the in-frame with tech assistance from the service mgr. at the local dealership who was a friend.....did not buy the tractor from them. I did have to pull the sleeves as the seals were shot (wet sleeve)......I learned why there was liquid coming out of the little holes on the side of the block....the upper seal was the orange one as I recall, blocking coolant from the crankcase, and the lower was black Neoprene blocking oil from getting in the coolant......the PO birdbrain had previously changed the seals and got them reversed.....they didn't like being in an environment for which they weren't designed. Had the head reworked at a machine ship. Lower bearings were OK so I only had the rings and maybe a piston or two replacement....don't remember on the piston. Total cost back in the '80's time line was $1k. That was my first and only LP. After that I only bought Diesel tractors and never looked back.
