49B John Deere Timing

I have most of the tractor disassembled. As I put it back together can it be timed without the flywheel cover intalled. i.e. replacing the governor and fan shaft assembly etc.
Thanks for any advise

Basic engine timing is the issue for you at the assembly stage. This means getting the camshaft and crankshaft in step (the biggie). There is a mating mark (dot) on the camshaft gear which is to align with a similar dot on the crankshaft gear. Also that the engine should have one of its pistons at TDC when installing the governor assembly. When installing the governor assembly AND the engine with either No. 1 or 2 @ TDC, the governor's magneto drive flange slot is to be horizontal.

With these two alignments (camshaft & governor), you should be all set for build-up and expect it to be right! (PatB)

Dean - One other thing I failed to list in my first note is to ensure alignment of the arrow markers, camshaft gear to camshaft!!! Super important. (PatB)

Sure, it can be rough in timed WITHOUT the flywheel cover. Of course, the camshaft must be timed correct with the crankshaft (gear timing marks) and the flywheel needs to be on the correct crankshaft spline such that when the flywheels Left Hand Impulse is at 3 o clock lined up with a flat mark on the tractors side the left piston is at TDC. (dont forget the clutch drive disk must ALSO be on its correct crank spline for balance purposes) After the cam is timed to the crank and the flywheel is on the correct crankshaft spline then you time the govenor drive gear to the camshaft. When the flywheels LHI is at 3 o clock and the left piston is at TDC the open female drive slot in the govenor shaft end (where mag or distributor mates) must be flat horizontal fore and aft. Once all that is done you can set the initial static start ignition timing so she fires right at TDC and the rest depends on if its a Magneto or distributor ignition.

Thanks I did not remove the crank and cam everything seemed to be alright with them however I have removed the clutch pulley and would like to remove the flywheel for repainting books seem to be a little confusing email is [email protected]
thanks

NO Problem, sounds like the Flywheel and cam to crank etc should already be in time, THEREFORE simply mark the Flywheel and Clutch drive disk so you can replace them back on the same splines after painting....
