4x4 gas engine tractor?

As I sit here still getting over my holiday flu, I can not help but ruminate.

I have never seen a 4x4 gas engine tractor, A true 4x4 not just a forward assist.

Did anybody make one? What model? What kind of production numbers?

Some of the early were gas. The Massey Harris 'General Purpose' from the 1930s was one such example. And there have been several homemade ones as wqell.

I think there were a few. Oliver for sure. I think IH and JD. Moline had 4wd lp tractors. Probably some other manufacturers also. While they were made they were very rare. I believe I watched a video of Chris Losey the Oliver guy on u tube showcasing a 4wd Oliver gas 1650 or 1750.

The Versatile G100 and the G-125 would be classic examples, the G100 used a Dodge 318 and the G-125 used a Ford 391.

I owned a G100 for several years, but never used it in the field. Here it is pictured with my Versatile D-145 and John Deere 8630, along with my late Uncle Joe.

A neighbor had a G-125 and used it heavily for tillage.

The G100 and G-125 are listed on Tractordata, but I didn't see any serial numbers, production numbers.

I still have a D-145 and the 8630.

and these tractors were built here in Canada, Winnipeg , Manitoba i remember couple neighbor's had the 145 model with the Cummins engine and straight pipes. they are scarce now.

John Deere Dain was all wheel drive. 3 wheels.

I believe the Wallace was the for runner to the Massey Harris GP. I hauled on from Worcester MA to Around Pontiac IL I think it was some 10 or so years ago. Had been restored in the semi distant past by the gyt that sold it. He had it for his kids to drive around with rubber belting on the wheels for driving in parades.

A dearly departed friend had a MH GP. He said you didn't want to use it to haul wagons. Going down hill a loaded wagon would start pushing, and push the tractor right over on its nose! They must have been balanced very well for pulling.

Topp-Stewart of Clintonville Wisconsin sold them back around 1920. I'm not aware of any connection with the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company of that same city but four wheel drive trucks really got their start in Clintonville. So the engineering expertise was certainly available. Some municipalities used them for road construction and maintenance and they were reported at the time as being fine performing machines. In 1920 they sold for $3000+ which was a hefty sum compared to say a Fordson. Granted, the Fordson has 2 wheel drive but you could buy a half a dozen of them for the price of one Stewart. And they were called "Stewart Tractors" even though the official name was Topp-Stewart. Clintonville, Wisconsin is located in Waupaca County. There is a Stewart factory still being used as a factory in the county seat of Waupaca but they manufacture liquid filters for the brewing industry in it now.

I ran into some more old pics of Stewart tractors. I read that only one exists and it sold at auction for $49500.

In the middle picture immediately above it states that the Canadian factory is located at the FWD Auto company plant in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I always suspected a relationship of some kind between FWD and Topp-Stewart seeing as how they were both manufacturers of four wheel drive equipment in the same small town.
