I have a 1300 ford 2 cyl diesel 4x4. I want to change the rear tire size from 8.3x24 to a 9.5x24. Will this mess up the 4x4 ratio ?

I will say yes, it will put the 4 wheel drive in a bind especially of blacktop.
If I leave my 4010 mule in 4 wheel drive on the blacktop road in about 1000 ft you will hear the limited slip differential make a Big popping sound.
On dirt no popping sound because the wheels can slip on the dirt easier than on blacktop.
If the circumference of the wheels are the same, then no problem

Thanks man, just dirt roads and fields around me. Tractor won't be used on hard surfaces at least not in 4 wheel drive Anway.

Even with the same differential ratios and same tires, ALL 4x4's tend to bind up on hard surfaces, especially when you turn. That's because the ratio changes as the two sides move at different rates in a turn. Some will slip without much effect, and others can hop and jump to come to equilibrium. It is hard on the drivetrain.

I'm with both oldsarge and Fritz on this one. Measure if you want to but you probably won't find enough of a difference to make you worry about it, especially on your dirt roads and fields. steve
 
The gear ratios on most "front assist" type of 4WD tractors have the front wheels running somewhere around 5% faster than the rear (as measured at the tire circumference, not the axle speed). This improves the turning performance since the fronts have a greater distance to travel when going around a curve. Increasing the diameter of the rear tires will take away from this "overdrive" effect of the front wheels. How much larger you can go on the rear tires before having the front tires being pushed instead of pulling depends on the ratios and existing tire sizes of your particular tractor. If the fronts are being pushed while driving straight they will really be getting pushed in a turn and the steering performance could be noticably reduced. Might have to use your wheel brakes when turning more than you do currently when in 4WD.

If you have the operators manual for it, they may list approved front/rear combinations. It'll be different, but weather or not that breaks things is hard to say.

Ideally you'd up-size the fronts to match the rears, to keep the ratio the same, but on a tractor that small, there may not be a proportionally larger front tire. Next size up from the stock 6.00-14 front is 7.00-14, which is quite a jump at that small size.

It's all about the ratio of circumferences from front to rear. The front axle should "lead" the rear slightly, meaning it is actually driving slightly faster, and is actually "clawing" at the ground a little bit.
 
Tractordata says the 6.00-14 ag front goes with the 8.3-24 ag rear, and 25x8.5-14 turf front goes with the 13.6-16 turf rear. If you could get the circumference or diameter of all those tires you could calculate the ratio of front to rear and that would give you an idea of how much that ratio can vary. Others have said that there is a certain amount of wiggle room before you break anything and I agree, but the devil is in the details.
 
You won't notice the difference,, most front wheel assist are 5-7% faster on the front, and any front wheel assist tractor will fill the front wheels off quickly if you run them on a hard road when engauged .
 
Just because you buy a tire with a certain spec'd size, doesn't mean that "all" tires with that marking are the same dimension.....depends on the mfgr. On match, the fronts have to be able to "pull" the rears by about 4% so that you can steer the machine, not have the rears pushing the fronts around.
