5 speed shifter

Is this a common issue w/5 sp shifter? Woodruff keyway
wallowed out in top of shifter shaft. I can"t figure how to get it
out of transmission w/out complete dissasembly. For 2 cents
I"d weld the shift lever to the shaft and let the next owner worry
about it!!!

Only after it reaches 60 years old... Trans will have to come apart :cry: That equals more worn parts to replace that you do not want to here about...
 
Was going to replace perfectly good 4 spd to get the granny
gear of the 5 spd. In your opinion, would it be worth it for bush
hoggin, discing and plowing with a 600?
 
The lower first gear of the 5 speed is helpful for certain tasks but not slow enough for a roto-tiller.

More importantly, if the 5 speed is from a x6x tractor, and you swap in all of the associated parts you will gain live PTO.

My 5 speed was frozen. Got it freed up with 50-50 atf and acetone mixed in oil can so I could apply directly to rust spots. Drained old oil, put in 8 quarts diesel, magnet in the drain plug, drove around ranch for a bit to warm it up. Drained diesel and found woodruff key on magnet. Refiled with 80-90 gear oil.

I'm not familiar with that tranny, but I second your opinion if you are serious and it can work, weld it and keep using it. Had a similar issue with a shift fork on a 2120 Ford tractor. I covered what I could with wet rags and welded the shift fork inside the tranny. That was 12 years ago and it is still working fine. It would have been a double split to replace it, didn t seem worth the hassle. Weld can be ground if it needs to come apart later.
