50 charging problem

I just had the generator tested and they put a new voltage regulator on it. I hook everything up and it charges when running but it discharges really bad when not running. Am I missing a diode or is something wired wrong? I have the wire from the battery hooked to the load tab on the voltage regulator which is where it was before.. does any one have a link to a wiring diagram. Any thoughts? thanks

First of all if it has a 4 terminal (BAT FLD LOAD ARM) Voltage Regulator, its BAT terminal wires to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter while the L (Load) terminal feeds hot batetry voltage to loads like lights n ignition via the switch. THE L TERMINAL DOES NOT WIRE TO THE BATTERY... Its the BAT terminal that eventually gets to the battery via the ammeter

Many 4 terminal VR's have BAT FLD LOAD together side by side with the 4th ARM/GEN terminal off on one side or the bottom all by itself.

If it had a 3 terminal (BAT ARM/GEN FLD) you can replace it with a 4 terminal and it will still work or vice versa with only a minor wiring change...

You should POLARIZE the genny BEFORE you start it cuz otherwise you can damage the VR!!!!

Check the wiring,,,,,,POLARIZE,,,,, and hope the VR isnt damaged...

I have to run but will check back later if you need wiring help cuz youre changing a 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 terminal VR.....
