I am going to replace the pto shaft main drive. (the shaft that goes from the flywheel to the back) How is the best way to get the shaft out and back in? Does it come out through the front or the back. Thanks for any help.

I've never done that job, but from the parts drawing it looks like the shaft would come out of the rear of the trans, but I think that you're going to have to do a double split as well as take the trans top cover off because there are a number of pieces that the PTO drive shaft goes through that might shift out of place when you pull the shaft out.

I haven't done that job on a 5000 but did it on my 7710. It requires a double split, you have to split it at the bellhousing to change the drive hub which bolts to the flywheel and do a rear split to get the shaft out as it comes out the rear. The shaft does just pull out nothing is disturbed inside of transmission didn't have to pull cover off. I'm sure someone will chime in that knows for sure if the 5000 is the same but I believe it is.

I’m not much of a mechanic, but when they did mine it was a double split, tractor in 3 pieces. Takes a few different stands to support everything!

A double split is needed to replace the drive hub at the flywheel. Replacing the shaft without replacing the hub means you'll be doing the job again soon.
