5000 Power Steering Pump

On the 5000 basket case project Im working on it has the old style P/S pump and remote mount tank.. I keep thinking I should change it over to the later pump while it's apart. The alternator mounting is interfering with mounting of the tank and some of the lines are MIA.. You have to love basket cases..

any suggestions is there any special stuff that needs done or is it bolt on and plumb the 2 lines

Thanks

That tractor originally had a generator with an external voltage regulator. If it has been converted to an alternator, the alternator is likely larger in diameter than the original generator, and that is why it is interfering with the later style p/s pump. You could fabricate new brackets that would hold the alternator farther out from the engine to allow the pump to fit. If you go that route, you would probably need a longer belt.

Sean is right

It originally had a 233 in it.. it now has a web block 268 in it, the 268 had all the brackets to mount the alternator and a cam driven tach drive.. the oe gauge panel is toast so I'll get a panel that works with the cam drive. Getting the alternator, trans cooler lines and the P/S lines all tucked in under the hood is going to take a bit..

Do you mean oil pump driven tach drive?

The later engines that used an alternator used a Motorola alternator with an external voltage regulator that was smaller in diameter than the Delco 10si alternators with the internal regulators that most people use these days for an alternator conversion for the earlier models that used the generator. The alternator mounting brackets for the Motorola alternator would put a 10si too close to the engine to be able to fit a later style power steering pump with the integrated reservoir. Those pumps barely fit with the original generator or Motorola alternator.
