hi i got a question about the john deere 5000 series tractors...5200/5300/5400 and so on. I was wondering what people thought of them? are they good little tractors? all the pros and cons stuff would be very appreciated. i am looking at one for utility work and light loader work.....sorry it's about such a new machine

They are good little tractors, "much" better than 2020's 2440's and the like....about the only thing I have had to do to them is clutch every now and then, just normal wear..

They're "much" better than the 2020s and 2440s PROBABLY because they have a lot less hours on them!!

OoH no It's more than that, they don't have the cobbled up hydraulic system the old ones have, If the old utility's that Deere used was all they had to offer Deere would be in the comode with all the other "unkowns" that have fell to the way sides,,It's a good thing that Waterlou was on the front lines...

I have a 5425 with 542 loader, I really like it. Very user friendly and lots of power for utility tractor. Lots of great features on the newer ones. No comparison to previous utility tractors I have owned.

My neighbor bought a 5200 when it was new. Before I bought a loader tractor I've borrowed it several times to load rd bales. Is there any reason for the clutch pedal to be very difficult to depress? It's also had a new clutch installed but it's still stiff.
Thanks,Jim

The 5000 series can't hold a candle to the 50/55 Mannheim tractors they replaced. The latest 5000's are now built in India and/or assembled in Agusta.
The 5000 series and the first half of the 5010 ten series were pure trouble. The clutch in particular and everything else in general.
All the old JD staff that knew better had retired by the 1990 introduction date.Nobody remembered that building a 1010/2010 is poor business practice.

I have 3 of the 5000 series and to date have had no trouble with any of them. 1997 5400mfwd w 540sll, 2004 5220 and 2005 5203. Good power (maybe a little loud). Not too hard on fuel. I don't find the clutch pedal to be that stiff. Easy to service. Just wish the 4wd would turn a little tighter.

buick/deere, looked @ 5ooo series, but got a 6430 @ 6230 to get the closed system & the triple wet clutch. What's your take on these?

A lot of bucks, good tractors. I can't imagine a place for to Premium line.
The Mexican built 6000 series with Hydraulic reverser are respectable. Pretty much a modern 4020/4320 with M4WD & good cab.

I had a 5410 with loader for 9 years and it was a good tractor for me. I used it mainly for brushhog (JD MX8) and loader work. I never had any problems with it worth mentioning. I hear that they have somewhat of a bad reputation but I don't know why. I would buy one again if I needed a tractor that size.

Bought a 5500 new with a 541 loader. Best tractor I’ve ever owned, 8000 hours and going strong. Loader was junk at about 6000 hours and replaced with another 541. New reversers clutch packs at 7000 hours around $2500 dollars to fix. Can’t complain. Traded in a 2640 with a 148 loader and a 2750. Never looked back. 5500 used every day on a 60 head dairy farm. Only use John Deere oil and changed motor oil every 200 hours.
