5000 SOS Transmission Help

Had my 65 5000 SOS out on a run on Saturday. It shifts up and down the gears real good (or as good as an SOS tranny can). However at a road end if the inching pedal was depressed and the tranny was in 9th gear, as soon as the inching pedal was released the tractor moves about 2 feet and then stops dead - like the transmision is trying to select 2 gears or just jams up. It appears that this only happens in 9th gear - it moves off as normal if transmission is in 8th or tenth.

Can anyone suggest the likely causes??

Thanks guys

I'm away from home so I don't have my manuals but both the Ford Manual and the I&T Manual have a chart in them that shows which clutches and which bands are engaged and disengaged for each gear. If you look at this chart I'm sure you will see that each clutch and band that affects 9th gear will also affect another gear. If you are absolutely positive that 9th gear is the only gear that has a problem then my guess is that it's not a clutch or band problem.
Did you come to a complete stop and then start again when it went 2 feet and stopped or were you still rolling when you released the inching pedal and it stopped? It has been posted here before that the inching pedal should only be used when coming to a complete stop. If you are only going to slow down to make a turn you should shift to a lower gear. I cannot confirm or deny this as my 5000 SOS has not had this problem.

The problem occurs the tractor has been stopped at a road end and the pedal released to move across the road. I can rectify the issue when it happens by pressing the inching pedal, downshift to 8th and then release the pedal again and the tractor will move normally. 8th gear is quite slow for trying to move out across a busy road even if you can upshift it quite quickly. The problem doesn't seem to occur if the inching pedal is not used. Manual i have for troubleshooting only seems to deal with problems experienced with upshift or downshift.
