5000 SOS update

Thought I'd bring everybody up to date on this 5000 SOS rebuild. Parts have been dribbling in from 3 different locations plus i bought a good used direct drive clutch housing from a tractor salvage yard in Canada. With new clutch discs, pressure rings and gaskets i started putting it back together. It was going well until i broke a pressure ring on the main shaft. Got more parts ordered now. I decided to hook the tranny back up to the engine so i can put the fuel tank, steering back together while I'm waiting for parts. Stay tuned for more pics and updates. Comment if you will. I love hearing what you have to say.

Did your replacement direct drive clutch come with the piston and return springs already installed? If not, I'd sure like to know how you got that together without the special tool.

Just came with the piston. I reused my old springs and retainer. I was able to put enough pressure on the return springs to get the spiral wrap retainer on. It worked good with air pressure so I'm hoping it'll work in the machine. You could see the bellevilles fluctuate up and down

You must either be really strong or else those springs were weak from the start, as I can't see how you were able to pull that off without the tool. Did you have the upper and lower wire loops on both sides of the springs?

I sure hope it works.. Like i said with air pressure you could watch the bellevilles fluctuate up and down. The clutches were free until you applied air

I had to order the pressure rings from vernon dell tractor in Iowa. I see where it's pending in my credit card but haven't heard anything from them about shipping the parts. Not a happy camper. I think I'll cancel the pending transaction on my credit card and reorder from somebody else.

Canceled that transaction from Vernon Dell Tractor in Iowa and reordered 312213 seal rings from John's Tractor in Indiana. Hope to get them sometime this week

I finally got the pressure rings today.. Having troubles getting the sun gear, main shaft and 2 and 3rd clutch assy. Maybe i will try putting the sun gear in first. I'm just kinda gun shy of breaking another ring on the main shaft

I finally got it together... Checking end play now.. Book says .005 - .015. I'm at .027 so I'm gonna have to shim the back cover

Your problem is that the end play is controlled by a variable thickness thrust washer which might be impossible to find. If the rear cover gasket is say .015" thick, you could leave it out and that would give you .012" end play. You could then substitute the gasket with anaerobic sealant.

Confusion on my part... Doing band adjustments... The book says band 1 torqued to 19-21 ft lbs then 1 1/4 turns back off. I screwed up before doing band adjustments. I always did the torque of 20 ft lbs but never backed it off 1 1/4 turns... Am i reading this right?
