hello I am not a big ford man but I have a 5000 sos that I would like to change over to a gear shift. is the trans used only on a 5000 or are there other models also and what is all needed for the swap

A 5000 SOS trans is unique to the 5000 only. There are no substitutes. As for rear axles, the ring and pinion are different between the SOS and standard 8-speed, so you're better off looking for a complete transmission & rear axle package off of a donor tractor.

In addition to what Bern has said, I believe that an 8 speed manual trans and rear axle from a 7000 should bolt up to a 5000 front half as well.

east central wi .some gears work some times then not if it was a jd every one would say rebuild it but as its a ford they say it is not worth the time and effort so I thought I would be better off with a gear shift but from reading all the remarks so far it sounds like no two guys agree on what is all compatible with my engine and backend so?

I didn't see any disagreement. I said look for another donor 5000, another said a 7000 would work as well, and a third said that a 5600-7600 would work also.

sorry when I reread them again I see what I missed about having to have a complete trans and rearend as a unit sorry again now I will have to see if there are any around thanks

I just did that swap for a friend on his 5000. His Select-O-Speed worked just fine, but the shift cable broke and we spent about a year looking for one before we went with the swap. I could sell you his SOS very reasonable... much cheaper than buying a parts tractor. I'm in n/w WI.
