504 hydraulics

I recently picked up an International 504. I wanted to do hydraulic filter and fluid on it. Found that the filter and bypass valve were missing. I replaced everything and now I'm having issues getting the hydraulics working again. The power steering seems to be working after a few back and firths of the wheel. But I have no loader movement or rear lift movement. Im wondering if there's air in it. They were working before I did this. Any tips on getting this going again?

Not at all familiar with that model. Can you with a rag and blow gun poked in the top of the fill hole with tractor running put a bit of air pressure on the oil and see if it works or not. Might need a helper with this. remember to not remove the rag before the air or you might get a mess.

On the left side of the transmission their is a square casting. This is where the hyd. pumps are. You have two pumps mounted piggy back, one for steering the other for hyds. and hitch. There should be a couple plugs on the casting for checking pressure. You can remove them and crank engine over to bleed the pumps.

I took the plug out next to the big hydraulic hose out and am getting nothing coming out of it. I unbolted the big house going up under the dash and it pumps oil out of that when I start it. But still no other functions working besides steering.

Update
I messed with it some more. Couldn't make any progress by bleeding air out of the lines. I took the flow divider under the steering wheel off and checked it out. Everything seemed fine. Cleaned everything and put it back together. Still nothing. I took the filter back out and tried with no filter again and everything is working now. It also pulled the screen partially out of the bypass valve. So apparently it was restricted and not getting enough fluid.

Do you have the proper oil in it? I could see the wrong oil not passing through filter or bypass.

I drained everything I could and then put new premium universal tractor fluid from the farm store. But it's already milky again. So I need to keep changing it. How much do the utilities hold? I found 13 gallons online but I didn't drain that much out or put that much in according to the fill plug under the left side foot.

Hello Chris well to YT! I assume you know there are 3 plugs to pull to drain the fluid. In the picture from and 460 & 560 operators manual two plugs are labeled 29 and one is 30. I would not recommend running without a filter. If you by chance did not know the rear plug labeled 29 also needed to be pulled there could have been a lot of water still remaining in the lower rear section. Due to what you might consider a poor design there are several spots that hold a pint or less in those tractors that do not drain completely, so unfortunately some old fluid always remains. As said above if you did not drain that rear section I would drain it all again and try again with a new filter. If you leave the system drained several days it may be that due to a weak pump it cannot reprise itself after a lot of the residual oil drains out of that second pump. If it does not prime again it may be possible that you will need to pull the filter start it up get prime and working then pull the cover and install the filter as quickly as possible to avoid drain down. An Operators Manual contains a lot of information to clarify service tasks and operation of a tractor, see link. You might as them if this manual covers the utility if you really want to split hairs. To be honest aside from a few differences in the hydraulic system the utility and row crop models a fairly similar. There are cheaper routes to go if you are okay with a downloadable manual. Send me an email if you want to go this route. Let me also caution you against sites that claim to offer free manuals, many of them are just scam sites looking to dump spam and viruses into your PC.

The pump is worn out -- you may get by with a repair kit, if those are still available .
Trying to prime with the plug out of the pump cover may work - this has been mentioned in one of the answers here.
There are two lines from the pump housing -- the smaller smaller is for the 3 pt hitch, and the larger is steering and aux hydraulics

Since the filter was left out, I wonder if the jumper tube to the pump was also left out. This connects the pumps to the filter housing.
As a last resort, leave the test plug out of the pump housing and with the tractor running apply some air pressure to the oil fill port -- this is messy if the pump primes, so be ready to shut the engine off quickly
