5040 Question

After a couple months getting my AC 5040 serviced and starter rebuilt i started it up yesterday and ran it awhile but something funny is going on with it, i changed fuel filters and bled the system according to the manual, i did it 4 different times and finally had to pull it off, after a few hundred feet it fired up and ran, i drove it around 20-30 minutes, moved some implements around and turned it off in front of the shed, went back 10-15 minutes later and it would not start, no smoke puffing out of the exhaust...just cranked over and over (i pushed the stop rod back in). Even if it had some air in the system it should've worked out as long as i ran it, the tractor didn't run like there was any air left in the fuel system. It should have started back up easily, i'll have to pull it off again looks like, i'm thinking maybe an injector pump issue or bad head gasket???? When it did start, the RPM's had to slowly come up to idle which was a little odd, what do you guys think?

A neighbor/friend with a David Brown 1200 had similar issues. He could get it running, then it wouldn't start again. I went and bled it methodically through all the steps, and that cured it. As long as flow from your tank is not an issue, I imagine you still have air trapped somewhere.

Will running it eventually get the air out? I did it step by step from the manual and had pure fuel coming out at each point, it sure is a pain to do!!! Bled my NH combine last week only once and it was good to go after filter change.

Each system seems to have its own characteristics. Air pockets don't generally work themselves through. They sure didn't with my neighbors David Brown.

Sounds like the fuel system might be sucking air.
Are you sure the seal on the primary fuel filter is OK and seated correctly?
Is it tightened correctly? IIRC, you have to hold the top bolt from turning as you tighten the bottom.
Just be careful!..... that bottom bowl is glass.

That's a Fiat at its heart isn't it? Those things are the hardest things to bleed that I've ever seen, but once they start, that's pretty much it, they run. I've got an Oliver version of it. I've run it out of fuel probably 5 times. I managed to bleed it and start it with the starter afterward just once, the other times, I've had to tow it a fair distance, but after it started that way it was fine. Tow it again and see it it lopes as soon as it starts.

I'm thinking you have another problem. You say you had the starter rebuilt. Is it turning fast enough? If it sat a while, I wonder if you have some stuck rings and just don't have a lot of compression. Is this a tractor that you've had a long time or something you bought recently?

Yep. Fiat design, made under license in Romania, if I recall correctly. Crude, simple tractor. But not troublesome. At least when they were newer. I don't know how they held up.

The 5050 looked nearly identical, but was made in Italy. Much nicer finish.

Not much difference in the 5040 and 5050 except the early 5040 had the 6 speed and the late 5040 had the 8 speed like the 5050,Long 460 and Oliver 1365.Late models and Long 460 had the hydrastatic steering,early AC models had the power assist steering like the Long 445,Oliver 1265,1365 2 wheel drives,debatable which was the best.Do like the 8 speed transmission better.
