I would like to know the pros and cons of the Allis chalmers 5040 especially any common problems.

Pros;
STOUT little 40hp Diesel tractor made in Romania.
P.S. is 1-finger & works great.
3-pt is very heavy duty. Brakes are good and easy to adjust.

Clutch is 2-stage for PTO and drive-line. 6 & 8 speed transmissions have upper 2 gears synchronized.

Cons;
On the 6-sp transmission; shifter is very loose and sometimes is a problem getting into the gear you want.
As some others have experienced, the PTO can clash a little getting into gear.
IDK if its a matter of the clutch not fully releasing or ?
The front grill can be hard or impossible to find if it gets broken.
Not sure what the material is; its kinda like fiberglass but not much fiber; perhaps expanded foam?
Other than that, parts shouldnt be too hard to find.

If you buy one, make sure you get a shop manual. Jensales has a good repro.

Can easily find the Fiat style grill,looks better than the AC grill anyway.

I'll add Fiat built in Romania,about the same tractor as the Long 445 and Oliver 1265.Parts are easy to find and usually less expensive than most tractors.Motors are tough,PTO is going to scrape a little when its engaged,overall a tough built machine.
