504D throttle HELP NEEDED

At the business end of the throttle where attached to the pump. what is the relationship / inter-action between the levers? one is attached to the linkage while the outher actully controls fuel. there seems to be a spring of sort trying to connect the two. moving the lever changes the rpms but not like it used to. more lever movement less rpm change than before. i was baling and noticed rpm's dropping. moved the throttle up and down and noticed the change in response. i'm thinking the shorter one needs to be able to move independently for governer response.

Look closely down where the two levers are together on the same shaft. Many times the control level is attached to the fuel lever with a , I guess you would call it a mousetrap spring.... this is so undue force is not transferred to the fuel shaft in the event that the stroke of the tractor linkage is greater than the stroke of the fuel lever. The spring may be disconnected or broken.
 
I see that. The spring is damaged and I cant get it to stay attached. I think I understand. As long as the throttle lever does NOT cause the fuel lever to try and exceed its end stops I should be able to use without damaging the pump. Does the fuel lever move in conjunction with the governor load?
 
No, it does not enter into the operation of the governor at all. Its purpose is so that you can use 100% of the control lever (governor) swing. In order to operate without that spring, your throttle lever and the governor lever would have to hit their stops at the same time. Which would work, but if for some reason the linkage becomes out of adjustment, or gets bent, then one or the other will hit first: if your control lever hits first, youll not be getting full power because youre not throwing the governor lever all the way. If the governor lever hits first, youll get full power but now the governor lever/shaft are under more tension than they should be. In short, its merely a safety device. The governor lever should hit first, then the spring winds a small amount as the throttle lever approaches the end of its travel.

I have a favor to ask of Frustrated Farmer, I would like to see some pictures of the generator mounting brackets for your 504 Diesel. I'm in the process of making Alternator mounting brackets for the D-188 engine and I have pictures of 2 different tractors with a generator and they are not the same.
