'51 8N Governor rework

Got me a kit. The 8N would not idle low. I have the governor on the bench, and sure enough the balls had flat spots. Now, before I tear something up, I Thought I"d best ask a question. I"m looking at the FO4 manual, and it does not show anything holding the drive shaft to the drive gear. It looks like it"s just a tight fit. What"s the best way to separate them with out doing damage?

Thanks for any help.

It is a press fit. When I rebuilt mine, I just set it on top of a vise with shaft between the jaws and gear resting on top. I used a punch to give the press end of the shaft a few delicate yet forceful wacks and it popped out. I used the bench vice to repress when I was ready to put it back together. There may be a better way and someone on here will let you know if there is but it worked for me.

The important thing to do is be careful not to peen the shaft while driving it through...I used a punch to drive it out and tough wood blocks to put it back.
