51 A question

My starter sometimes makes a grinding sound like the teeth did not engage the flywheel gear. The starter has been rebuilt with new gear. I have a flywheel gear ordered, anyone know how to remove the old gear and install the new one?

Easy job.just use a punch and work your way around till it's off,don't take any time at all.When you put on the new one just lay it on flywheel,take your torch and heat it all the way around and hammer it on.Of course you HAVE to remove the flywheel.Ron

I did one 2 weeks ago, they really don't take much heat, but you do need a oxy/acetylene outfit.
Lay the ring gear on the flywheel, and start heating around the circle evenly and it will almost drop on.

i use an elec. oven heat to 450 degrees and it will fall on

2 hand-held Propane bottle-Torches will get it hot enough...about 400-500 Deg.

Let it cool when on and in place and you are done.

I had good luck reversing mine and then taking a die grinder and putting a slight bevel on the front side again. Saved buying a new one.

Thanks for the advice, used a gas axe and heated it up very light taps with hammer removed it and set new gear on flywheel and heated until I could start gear by hand (using welding gloves) then heated until light taps installed the gear.
