51 case SI brakes

I would love to be able to be one of the guys offering help and advice on here. But I am a long way away from having the knowledge or experience that most of you have. So for now, I will keep asking the smart people here. Haha

I picked up a 1951 SI yesterday. Brought it home and reinstalled the fuel tank and hood. Changed the battery terminals, and fired it up. Runs great, moves, and lifts and curls the bucket just fine.

The problem that I'm having is with an apparent lack of braking. The pedal is hard as a rock and barely moves when depressed. I wasn't expecting miracles from these brakes. But I was expecting some sense of confidence that they would be able to slow this machine down.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like the Discs are seized to the shaft. Yours are Single Disc brakes, 1 Disc on each side. One problem was that the spline area on the disc was "deep", and they had a tendency to seize to the shaft. Very difficult to free up. At this point, sounds like you will need to pull the covers & inspect. Good luck.

It seems like pedal and linkage are free. I am about to tear it apart and see. But from the way the rods connecting the pedal to the brakes are somewhat bent, it seems like someone has been standing hard on this pedal from quite some time. Haha. I'm not sure the last owner ever had brakes. That would be my guess.

Is there a source you guys would recommend for a service manual for this tractor.

Thanks,
Chris

So it turns out the shaft going through the left cover was frozen. I pulled that side apart and cleaned everything and reassembled. I will take it for a spin around the yard tomorrow to test and adjust if necessary. But now I have some pedal movement. So that is a good start.
