52 8n axle nut

Any trick to removing the rear axle nut? I've got a 7/8 drive with a 2" socket along with a 36" extension pipe off the breaker bar. Can't budge it...the axle nut does come off counter clockwise....right? I want to check the inner nut for tightness as I have slight rear wheel play on one side....

The axle is threaded standard RH thread.

You need a longer "cheater" or a 1" impact wrench.

NOT sure what you mean by the "inner nut", tho?

If you have what appears to be a double nut on the end of the axle you may have a Swagger nut that is made to be used when the axle threads are worn down and the original nut will not tighten. The outer nut squeezes down on a tapered threaded split inner nut flange to be able to use the worn out axle. It is right hand thread and you should be able to remove the outer nut then the inner nut without that much problem. Are you sure the outer nut is not welded.

Keeper? There is a channel on the axle but i dont see any key on either channel. I think I saw a picture of what looks like a 1/2 wire loop that sits between the outer and inner axle nut...it looks like there are two nuts separated by the 1/2 wire loop....could it be one nut and the wire loop is the keeper???

Thank you for the help!

yes, I suppose the standard nut could look like two....
It's one big nut with a groove in the middle.
The wire keeper fits in this groove AND the tip of the wire
goes into a hole in the 'groove'
sometimes the wire is broke off but the tip is still in the hole jamming things up.
Make sure the holes are clear and try again.
Also, when the hub is worn badly, some will try to really horse that nut down, even when the threads are already bottomed out.
If so, ya need a very long breaker bar and some serious grunt to get it loose.
On ones that refuse completely, sometimes a chisel and a big hammer will get it moving...last resort, the nut will be junk then.

I did not remove the wire keeper. It looked like two nuts seperated by 1/2 circle keeper. I was trying to remove the "outside" nut 1st and then remove the keeper....As you can tell, I'm really new at the 8n stuff....learned a gang of things, thanks to folks like you willing to share their knowledge.....Thank you!
