52 8N engine stuck...continued

Well, tonight I jacked up the rear end and put the tractor in gear and turned the rear wheels and to my shock the wheels turned(one in one direction the other in the opposite direction) but the motor didn't budge. I tried all gears and the wheels turned effortlessly but the engine is still as tight as ever. I took the shifter cover off and the gears don't appear to be turning unless the tractor is in neautral. What's up???

LOL!!

Thanks!!! I needed that.

If you jack both back wheels off the ground, then you are understanding the principal of a differential.

Try jacking one.

Think about this...

I can be turning a sharp curve with my 8N, the outside wheel has to go a lot farther than the inside one.

Don't worry - everything is fine. The wheels are supposed to turn in opposite directions - in fact, that's how you set the preload in the rear axle bearings - you add/remove shims until the wheels turn in opposite directions.

Dang! Dunk is always just a bit faster than me. And thank goodness for "edit" - kept me from letting my "stupid" show again!

You say you put it in gear, and you know it's in gear,,,then the engine is supposed to turn! That is if the wheel turns.Learn me something new !

My stupid is showing anyway. I edited out the following, because I thought Dunk's comment about the differential explained it - maybe it does, and I'm just too stupid to get it. I just reasoned out that what I thought I understood about what Dunk said was wrong (Dunk wasn't wrong - my understanding was, if that makes any sense at all) Here's what I edited out:

As for the wheels turning even when the tractor is in gear: I sure hope they're supposed to, because mine does it. It runs and works fine, though. I don't have the knowledge to explain it, but I'm sure someone here will.

Joe - who should probably just call it a day and go to bed

If the tractor is in gear, and both rear wheels are off the ground, and the bearing preload on the rear end is correct...

One wheel should turn frontwards with you pushing it, the other should turn backwards, and the tranny should just sit there doing nothing.

Now, lock the brake on one wheel, and turn the other, the tranny and engine should both turn.

I'm probably the one that should go to bed.

Hey!!!

I know!!

Lets both stay up and make this interesting!!!!!

Well you now know the differential works like it should. I.E. work normal. My self I always just set a 12 volt battery in them and hit the starter button with short fast taps to pop one free. The starter does not have enough torque to hurt any thing but has probably 2 or 3 times the torque you have when you try to turn it over with a tire

set the wheels on the ground and push it in high gear. if you cant get it to turn over with 2 pushing it then I would say remove the head and see whats up.]
