52 8N Front End movement?

Hey I have alot of movement in my left side front end mainly in the hub area and was wondering before I tear into everything if the hubs commonly wear out or should it just need new barrings and seals to be good as new? What is everyones expirence with this? Thanks

The hub bearings are tapered roller and adjusted with a keyed castle nut.

Before making this into a big deal, simply remove the little hubcap, and the cotter key, then snug up the bearing adjustment nut.

You want a TINY amount of play in the bearings when you're done, NO pre-load.

If it quickly loosens up again, the bearing are damaged and need to be replaced.

Dell thats what I was thinking I didnt know if the hub wore out very easly though. Thanks once again. Been working 35+ acres for a few weeks now. The OL 8N just keeps going with whatever I throw at her.

They are just like older automotive front bearings, remove hubs, press out races, press in new races, one seal, grease, replace.tighten, loosen to nearest hole, put in cotter pin ,cap and voila, you got it!---lha

I am gonna say something that might sound/look to be disrepectful but it is not because this same thing has angered me many times , maybe not the same item involved but the same mental exercise. Someone indicates ineptness in doing something like the act of replacing bearings and races on a 60 yr old azle and it seems really way out there that he don t git it. Well it is that way in our time of life now. So much has passed and gone on that we take for granted as 60 and 70plus oldsters that a couple of geberations has not experienced and so missed what was a way of life for us. I have decided for myself to just help as I can and leave the (surely you can t do that) stuff left for others to think. If I had to ask for help about the stuff I have in this world that I don t have a clue about you could write a Bible about it. This world has passed me by so fast it isn t even funny any more. I think I will just hush and let er soak for a while. Devious

Actually I pulled it apart and the barrings look great. I repacked them and tightened everything up and its good as new but it now looks like the Spindle Bushing 3109 has worn out and that is where the movement is coming from. So I will be getting one of those in and fixing that problem soon. Thanks again

Well Drew, as others say, it's pretty easy on Henry's old
tractors. However, when I trashed a "lubed for life" front wheel
bearing on my F-350 powerstroke Ford truck, The whole hub
had to be replaced at a total cost of about $500 for the hub
and another couple hundred $$ for labor - studs had to be
removed and re-installed in the new hub, etc. Last time I did
the front wheel bearings on my 8N, it cost me $50 for all 4
and about an hour's worth of labor, only because I had to
cut one cone off with a torch. How times have
changed............
